First aid for minor injuries: How to properly treat a wound

Abrasions, cuts, blisters or minor burns – everyone has experienced them. But few people know that even for minor injuries, the correct first aid procedure is important. Poor treatment can slow healing or increase the risk of infection. Read the step-by-step instructions on how to do it.

1. Stop the bleeding

  • For minor cuts or abrasions, bleeding usually stops quickly on its own.
  • If not, apply sterile gauze and apply gentle pressure for a few minutes.
  • Keep the affected area above the level of your heart (for example, with your arm raised) – this will reduce pressure and help stop the bleeding.

2. Clean the wound

  • Rinse the wound with clean water (lukewarm, not ice cold!). If there is dirt (sand, gravel) in the wound, gently remove it with tweezers disinfected with alcohol.
  • Avoid using soap directly on the wound – it can be irritating.
  • Use a gentle antimicrobial agent , such as Actolid spray , which cleans and protects without burning.

3. Protect the wound – with a moist dressing

  • Let the wound “breathe”? That’s an old myth!
  • Modern medicine recommends moist healing , which keeps the wound covered, moist, and protected from bacteria and dirt.
  • Use a plaster, sterile dressing or hydrogel depending on the type and size of the wound.
  • For deeper or more sensitive wounds, we recommend Actolind gel and spray , which promotes regeneration and reduces the risk of infection.

4. Monitor the wound condition

  • The wound should gradually shrink, hurt less, and be free of significant redness or pus.
  • If the condition does not improve within 2-3 days or signs of infection appear (redness, warmth, pus, odor), contact a doctor.

5. What not to do

  • Do not cover the wound with adhesive tape without a sterile layer
  • Don't pick the scabs.
  • Do not use harsh "old wives' advice" such as toothpaste, butter or iodine directly on the wound.
  • Don't neglect tetanus – for deeper injuries, find out if a booster shot is needed

Summary

Proper wound care from the very beginning significantly affects its healing. Use gentle products and follow the principles of moist healing - your skin will thank you with faster and better regeneration.
